37. Countless Rocky Mountains and One Icy Green Lake

Muncho Lake Provincial Park in northern British Columbia contains lots of spectacular folded mountains and a 12 km long jade-colored lake.

The park is on Alaska Highway between Toad River and Liard River. One can view the impressive geological formations of Folded Mountains towering above both sides of the road (also in yesterday’s post). According to the park information, “tectonic deformations have folded the limestone giving these mountains their unique appearance.”

I love the distinctive appearance of the mountains, but I was even more impressed by the color of the lake. Muncho Lake is green tinted by minerals. Even the ice appeared to be green! I have seen green lakes, but have never seen green ice! Needless to say, I have never seen or heard a seagull walking on green icy lake!

Moreover, the area is so serene and secluded, even it is by the side of a highway. If you love magnificent beauty of nature, as well as solitude, Muncho Lake Provincial Park is the place to be!

Oh, not far from Muncho Lake, there is a hot spring – Liard River Hot Spring Provincial Park. Yes, you heard it right! There is a natural hot spring in the middle of this cold place. And, believe or not, it is free. All you need to do is to walk about 0.5 mile to reach the pool. How hot is that? 🙂
