41. Kluane National Park and Reserve

A dramatic landscape of broad valleys and monumental mountain ranges, Kluane National Park and Reserve is the largest internationally protected area in the world (shared by Canada and US) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan, and the largest ice fields outside of the polar caps.

As you can tell, the above is copied from the official information. The un-official version, from me, is Kluane NP is huge! Too large that most of the places are not accessible to us, the regular visitors.

Fortunately, the scenery is so beautiful that just to view it from the side of highway is breathtaking (Alaska Highway and Haines Highway). There are also several roadside parking areas leading to various points of interests. One stop is particularly stunning – Kathleen Lake, on Haines Highway (you have to make a detour from Alaska Highway).

Too bad I was there in the middle of the day; the pictures are not as nearly beautiful as the real thing. To make it a little bit more colorful and vibrant, as you can see from the first picture, I added a bright red umbrella to the picture, even though I didn’t have to use it at all. 🙂
